Stala se jest věc divná
Anonymous, 15th Century ed. Jordan Sramek and Daniel Mahraun
A jaunty, medieval Christmas carol.
SA a cappella
This selection, from the 15th-century Czech Jistebnický kancionál, provides a marvelous introduction to medieval polyphony in the Czech language. Multiple verses with refrains offer opportunities for variation of solo/tutti singing. An IPA transliteration of the text is included.
Composer’s Notes
Jistebnický kancionál bears the place name Jistebnice, a town located in the Tábor district of the South Bohemian region of modern-day Czech Republic. Created around 1430 by Hussites (followers of the teachings of Czech Protestant reformer, Jan Hus), it is recognized as that community’s earliest surviving collection of vernacular religious music in all of the Czech-speaking lands. It includes the Hussite liturgy (translated from Latin to Czech) as well as a number of vespers hymns, spiritual songs, and Christmas carols.
