Telling the story of the Angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary, the gorgeous 5-part polyphony and simple chant passages may be heard as a Renaissance Biebl “Ave Maria.” An IPA transliteration of the text is included.
Composer’s Notes
Benešovský kancionál bears the place name Benešov, a town located in the Central Bohemian region of modern-day Czech Republic, and home to burgher Václav Kolářovice, who initiated the manuscript’s assembly in the late 16th-century. The meticulously compiled collection represents an important source of polyphonic settings of vernacular spiritual songs used by the Utraquist literary brotherhood (a moderate Hussite faction). All works are anonymous (including this 5-part setting of an earlier monophonic song, Poslán jest od Boha anjel), with the exception of seventeen compositions attributed to Jan Trojan Turnovský (ca.1550–1606), Benešov-based, Utraquist priest and notable composer of Renaissance Czech polyphony.

Poslán jest od Boha anděl,
jemuž to jméno Gabriel,
tak maje jméno od něho,
vykládá se síla jeho.
Do krajiny Galilejské,
kdež jest město Nazaretské,
v kterémžto Maria Panna
Josefovi zasnoubená.
Přišel k ní ten silný anděl,
kdežto drahou pannu viděl,
v tom městě přebývající,
pozdravil jí touto řečí:
Řka zdráva plna milosti,
toť jest Bůh vzkázal z výsosti,
kterýž tě zvolil nad jiné,
dáť požehnání předivné.
Počneš syna a porodíš,
jehož to jméno Pán Ježíš,
on sám kralovati bude,
království konce nebude.
TRANSLATION:
An angel is sent from God,
whose name is Gabriel.
By whom he has been named,
so is his power invested.
To the land of Galilee,
where is the city of Nazareth,
in which the Virgin Mary
is betrothed to Joseph.
The powerful angel came to her,
beholding the maiden most pure,
residing in that city,
greeting her with this salutation:
Hail, full of grace,
I am sent from God on high,
who chose you above all others,
to give a wondrous blessing.
You will conceive and bear a son,
whose name is the Lord Jesus,
He himself will reign,
and his kingdom will have no end.
