Duet for mezzo-soprano and tenor, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
“I Have Loved You with an Everlasting Love” is a duet for mezzo-soprano and tenor. The words from Jeremiah 31 speak of hope and renewed joy.

I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you to me with my faithfulness. I will build you up again; again you will take up your tambourines and dance with the joyful. I will turn your mourning into gladness, I will give you comfort and joy instead of sorrow. I will make a new covenant with my people; I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people. I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more.
