Aria for soprano, piano

Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.

Jeremiah’s words of sorrow for his people are sung by the soprano soloist in “Jeremiah’s Lament.” Words from Jeremiah 8 and 9 provide the text for this haunting aria.

The full piano/vocal score of Prophet Songs and the orchestral score and parts are available from the composer at timothyhoekman@gmail.com.

Text

My joy is gone, grief is upon me, my heart is sick. Listen to the cries of my people: Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her king no longer there? The harvest is past, the summer has ended and we are not saved. Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her king no longer there? Because my people are crushed, I am crushed; I mourn and horror grips me. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears; I would weep day and night for the slain of my people.
