O Zion, Herald of Good News
Words from Isaiah 40:9-11 proclaim that God comes with might to rule, but also as a shepherd to feed God’s flock.
Duet for tenor and baritone, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
“O Zion, Herald of Good News” is a duet for tenor and baritone. The words from Isaiah 40:9-11 proclaim that God comes with might to rule, but also as a shepherd to feed God’s flock.

Text
O Zion, herald of good news, go up on a high mountain, lift up your voice with a shout. O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, do not be afraid. Say to the cities of Judah: Look! Here is your God! The Lord God comes with might, with an arm that will rule. The Lord will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms and carry them close to his heart and gently lead those with young.
