Da Pacem Domine
An imaginative setting of the Latin version of Give Peace, O Lord that utilizes the full expressive range of modern harmonic languages.
ATB div. a cappella choir
Shruthi Rajasekar’s Da Pacem Domine explores the composer’s experience of spiritual crisis while facing personal loss. The opening of the piece reflects this turmoil, with a starting performance marking of “Bereft.” As the piece continues, different types of Gods are named in these markings, including “Wrathful” and “Peaceful,” before the work ends with the composer’s conclusion that the Divine power is a “Loving” God, who comforts and gives peace in times of distress.
Composer’s Notes
The concert program that inspired this setting of “Da pacem, Domine” explores music that has been lost over time. This setting takes this context and begins in a place of feeling forsaken. But the sense of being lost is transformed upon the acknowledgement of “Deus noster” – our God. In embracing the Divine, peace is found.
– Shruthi Rajasekar
Text
Da pacem, Domine, in diebus nostris
Quia non est alius
Qui pugnet pro nobis
Nisi tu Deus noster
TRANSLATION:
Give peace, Lord, in our time
Because there is no one else
Who will fight for us
Other than you, God
