We Sing to Breathe Together
Using descriptions of nature and community, “We Sing to Breathe Together” is at once accessible and lively, earnest and uplifting.
Unison chorus & piano
First performed at the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference (COP 26) in Glasgow, Scotland, this work from composer Shruthi Rajasekar combines an accessible vocal melody with a lively piano accompaniment. Mallika Balakrishnan’s bespoke text, “We Sing to Breathe Together” reflects Rajasekar’s and Balakrishnan’s belief in the ability of choirs to bring people of different backgrounds together through the unity of breath and song.
Text
In all of our lungs the same air flows
to forge us into unity
The breath we draw, the hopes we share,
make comrades and community
The wind that blows in from the west
to Scotland where we sing
The mountain air wakes up the world
so brisk and billowing
From gentle breeze to tempest storm
and skies from blue to grey
Diversity’s among the lessons
learned from nature’s way
The mysteries hidden by the haar
that rises from the sea
Inspire us to exercise
our curiosity
And so we ask how we may build
a better world to share
We learn to treat our neighbors
with compassion and with care
Each morning now we sing to breathe
together, all as one
Like gusts and gales propelling forth,
our journey just begun
– Mallika Balakrishnan
