A House Made of Music
A sweet song of gratitude to those who have brought music into our lives.
SATB, piano
This lovely piece embodies the sentiment of gratitude to those who have given us the gift of music. Homophony and accessible voice leading (with a few voice pairs) make this a great choice for developing mixed choirs. A tribute to parents, music teachers, mentors, and anyone else who has supported a life of music, “A House Made of Music” is a sweet way of saying “thank you.”
Composer’s Notes
For those of us in whom music runs in our veins, it almost feels like the music has always been there. That we were born with it. But I would conjecture that we can also trace the beginning of our musical passion back to a single person, or a few people throughout life, who encouraged the music to emerge. I grew up in a house that was full of music, and I remember the day when my Mom asked me if I wanted to take piano lessons (I said “yes” right away). I remember when she lied to my school and told them I had a dentist appointment, but we were actually going to go see a children’s choir perform at another school (I joined that choir the next year). Ditching school for choir! A family of rebels! Both piano and choir shaped my musical journey, and the teachers I met along the way ushered me from my childhood house of music and pushed me forward, asked more from me, and made sure I always had room to grow.
This piece is about those people. It’s about the mentors that brought the music out of us, that introduced us to classical music, to choir, to singing as an emotional release or as prayer. We’ll have singing with us until the end of our lives, and shouldn’t we be thankful along the way? I sure am. Thanks, Mom!

Text
You sang to me
When I was a baby
Too little to hum along
When I was a child
We sang together, lullaby
and goodnight
You taught me words
are meant for singing,
Drums for beating,
The chorus for repeating
Come along, come along you said,
we’ll carry the tune together.
Come along, come along and sing with me.
We cherish the songs you taught us,
Your voice, so kind, so true–
Like the sunlight that wakes the spring
teeming with life anew.
When the world sings
It is a prayer of thanksgiving
Hallowed be thy name.
Welcome are those who
Come along, come along you said,
we’ll carry the tune together.
Come along, come along and sing with me.
Our house is made of music
Our hearts are made of song.
Our days are harmonic,
Our nights, a moonbeam long.
How do I say thank you,
Thank you for finding
the music in me?
How to express the blessedness
For the song that got us here
Come along, come along you said,
we’ll carry the tune together.
Come along, come along and sing with me.
