Little Blades of Grass
A thoughtful musical setting of a spiritual question: How are our actions seen by God.
TTBB a cappella
“Little Blades of Grass” is a thoughtful piece for a men’s choir that is moving beyond completely homophonic 4-part music. Some independent vocal lines are present, but are always used with intention, and are set up to be easily accomplished.
Composer’s Notes
Stephen Crane has some wild poetry out there, and much of it is very vivid. This quiet little poem has such a great message, one we can all take to heart. It is better to live a good life, not keeping score, then to tally up good deeds to be ablt to boast about them. Being a decent person should be a habit of the heart, not a mark on a scorecard.

Text
In heaven,
Some little blades of grass
Stood before God.
“What did you do?”
Then all save one of the little blades
Began eagerly to relate
The merits of their lives.
This one stayed a small way behind,
Ashamed.
Presently, God said,
“And what did you do?”
The little blade answered, “Oh my Lord,
Memory is bitter to me,
For, if I did good deeds,
I know not of them.”
Then God, in all His splendor,
Arose from His throne.
“Oh, best little blade of grass!” He said.
