Licensing
Licensing is the way composers and publishers are paid for various uses of their copyrighted work, beyond the sale of sheet music. We appreciate your due diligence, and want to make licensing as accessible as possible. The following information applies to all pieces published by Graphite. For music published by any of the other publishers listed on our website, please get in touch with them directly.
Here are some types of licenses you may be seeking:
For printing or re-printing:
- Graphite Publishing lyrics (not music) in your…
- concert program (not for a worship service): clearly print composer, lyricist, and publisher names; no license required.
- Graphite Publishing music, (or your arrangement of our music, after contacting us for a custom Arrangement License) in your published collection, for print or digital distribution: Print License
For writing further arrangements of Graphite Publishing music:
- For small customizations of our music (choral or instrumental parts), i.e. simplifying choral parts for a small treble section, adding one obbligato instrument to a piece, etc: Adaptation License
- For arranging or revoicing choral parts for an entire piece (not just one section): Choral Arrangement License
- For creating an instrumental ensemble accompaniment for Graphite music or an instrumental version (without choir): Instrumentation/Orchestration License
For using your recording of Graphite Publishing music:
- Rehearsal tracks: rehearsal tracks for select pieces are available for purchase on our website. If you wish to create your own rehearsal tracks instead (vocals and/or keyboard), please reach out to info@graphitepublishing.com to request permission.
- Downloadable Audio (i.e. permanent downloads distributed through iTunes, Amazon Music, etc., or your own site, even if free) or CD (whether sold or given away): Mechanical License.
- Streaming Audio (i.e. Apple Music, Spotify, etc): the streaming platforms pay us this licensing (through The MLC). Please carefully list title, songwriter/arranger, and publisher with your album distributor, and notify us of the album so we can match with it at The MLC. Mechanical license is also required if downloads are also available.
- Online Video (posted on YouTube, social media, or your website, without downloads available): A Performance/Streaming License is required if you are selling paid access to viewing your video.
- DVD (video) or a permanently downloadable video file, whether the music is performed on-screen (e.g. concert video) or off-screen (as a soundtrack), whether sold or given away: Synchronization License
- Radio or TV broadcasts of a performance (live or pre-recorded): Broadcast License
If you have any questions about licensing, please reach out to info@graphitepublishing.com for guidance.
