Aria for tenor, piano

Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.

In “With What Shall I Come before the Lord?” the tenor soloist acts as the prophet Micah. He asks and answers the well-known question: “What does the Lord require of you?”

The full piano/vocal score of Prophet Songs and the orchestral score and parts are available from the composer at timothyhoekman@gmail.com.

Text

With what shall I come before the Lord, to bow down before God on High? Shall I come with burnt offerings and year-old calves? Would the Lord take delight in thousands of rams or ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? O, mortal, God has told you what is good, and what does the Lord require of you? Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.
