Where is the Door to the Tavern
A rowdy, highly rhythmic celebration of life and is accompanied by double bass and pitched beer bottles.
SATB with divisi, double bass and 3 pitched bottles
A wild setting of a selection from the anthology “The Gift”, poetry of the great Sufi poet Hafiz, translated/transformed by Daniel Ladinsky. I was taken with the mystical notion of being intoxicated on God and of the willingness to see everything as a potential “door to God.” A rowdy, highly rhythmic celebration of life and was is accompanied by double bass and pitched beer bottles, this piece was definitely inspired by drinking longnecks at the local tavern!
Text
Where is the door to the tavern?
Where is the door to God?
In the sound of a barking dog
In the ring of a hammer
[In a drop of rain]
In the face of everyone I see.
– Hafiz (14th c.) translated by Daniel Ladinsky
