Song of Moses and Miriam
A vigorous, march-like duet with words from Exodus 15.
Duet for soprano, baritone, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
The “Song of Moses and Miriam” celebrates the delivery of the Israelites from their Egyptian oppressors. The words of this duet for soprano and baritone come from Exodus 15.

Text
The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is his name. I will sing to the Lord for he is highly exalted; horse and rider he has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song and has become my salvation. This is my God, whom I will praise, my father’s God, whom I will exalt. Your right hand, o Lord, glorious in power, shattered the enemy. In the greatness of your majesty you overthrew all of your foes. You sent out your fury to consume them like stubble. Among the gods, who is like you, o Lord, awesome in splendor? In your steadfast love you led your people and guided them to your holy dwelling place. The Lord will reign forever. Sing to the Lord for he is highly exalted; horse and rider he has hurled into the sea.
