Come, All You Thirsty People
An enthusiastic invitation to enjoy the gifts given to God’s faithful people. Words from Isaiah 55.
Aria for tenor, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
“Come, All You Thirsty People” is an aria for tenor. In the words of Isaiah 55:1-5, God invites the people to enjoy the gifts that God freely offers to the faithful.

Text
Come, all you thirsty people, come to the waters; come, eat, drink, buy without money. Why spend your money for what is not food? Why spend your wages for what does not satisfy? Come all you thirsty people, come, eat, drink, buy without money; I give it all for free. Listen to me and you will enjoy the fat of the land; listen and you will delight in abundance. Open your ears, come to me, listen well and you shall live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you; you shall call nations you do not know, and nations will come running to you, because the Lord, your God, the Holy One will give you glory.
