Let the Children Come to Me
A joyful baptism anthem using Jesus’ words from Mark 10 and part of Psalm 121.
SATB chorus (soprano solo), organ
A joyful baptism anthem using Jesus’ words from Mark 10 and part of Psalm 121.
Composer’s Notes
This anthem was written for my son Daniel’s baptism in 1992 and then used again at my son Nathan’s baptism in 1996. The text combines Jesus’ words from Mark 10:14 (“Let the children come to me, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these”) with portions of Psalm 121, focusing on God’s promises. The lively tempo and syncopations make for a joyful celebration of the sacrament of baptism.

Text
Jesus said, “Let the children come to me,
For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
Rejoice and celebrate, sing alleluia,
Give thanks for this new child of God!
Little child of the covenant,
Your help comes from the Lord,
The maker of heaven and earth,
Who watches over you by day and by night
And never ever goes to sleep.
And Jesus said:
“Let the children come; do not hinder them,
For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
Rejoice and celebrate, sing alleluia,
Give thanks for this new child of God!
The Lord will watch over you,
And keep you from all harm,
And be your shelter and shade;
The Lord will watch your going out and coming in
Both now and forever more.
And Jesus said:
“Let the children come; do not hinder them,
For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
Rejoice and celebrate, sing alleluia,
Give thanks for this new child of God!
