Go Out in Joy
An exuberant duet about a time when even nature will participate in our joy: the mountains will sing and the trees will clap their hands! Words from Isaiah 55.
Duet for soprano & mezzo-soprano, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
In the duet “Go Out in Joy,” the soprano and mezzo-soprano exuberantly sing of a time when even nature will participate in their joy: the mountains will sing and the trees will clap their hands! The words are from Isaiah 55:12-13.

Text
You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace. Cypresses will grow in place of thorns, and myrtles instead of briars. The mountains and hills will burst into song and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
(adapted from Isaiah 55:12-13)
