In paradisum
A dramatic and lamenting ode to one fallen and remembered.
SATB a cappella
In Memory of Jonathon Kaspar.
With both Latin and English text taken from the “In paradisum” of the Latin Requiem Mass, this piece guides one from the mortal coil to heavenly realms with flowing melodies and luxurious harmonies. A chant-inspired solo calls out above open, hollow textures. It gives space for grief throughout, but calls for hope in the end, as one approaches the gates of heaven to see the ranks of welcoming angels and dear Lazarus.
Text
in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.
Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem.
May angels lead you into paradise;
upon your arrival, may the martyrs
receive you and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem.
May the ranks of angels receive you,
and with Lazarus, the poorman, may you
have eternal rest.
