SATB, S solo, piano

This piece is excerpted from Hensel’s larger festival anthem for St. Cecilia’s Day. The music has been transcribed from the original manuscript with a newly composed accompaniment (the original piano part is lost). A soaring soprano solo adds brilliance and intensity to this fugal work.

Composer’s Notes

“Alleluja, Gloria in Excelsis,” by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847) is the conclusion to the work “Zum Fest der Heiligen Cäcilia” dated 1833, scored for mixed chorus, piano, and soprano solo. In the original performance, it seems the piano accompaniment
was played from a separate part, now lost. It is a little perplexing, because the piano accompaniment is present earlier in the vocal score, then disappears. I wrote a new accompaniment for this edition based on earlier examples in the work. Special thanks to the Berlin State Library, which has made the facsimile available to the public.

– Jonathan D. Campbell
