A Cradle Hymn
A lush, beautiful SATB setting of Watts’ famous Christmas text.
SATB a cappella
This smoothly crafted SATB setting of Watts’ famous Christmas text is accessible for younger groups and church choirs, and more advanced ensembles will savor the rich harmonies. A perfect choice for services and concerts in December.
Composer’s Notes
My goal for this piece was to write an accessible unaccompanied SATB Christmas
anthem in the spirit of Herbert Howells or John Rutter. The extended vocalise
introduction sets the tone for the main body of the piece. Ensembles should take a
smooth legato approach, and feel free to let the tempo ebb and flow.

Text
Hush, my dear, lie still and slumber,
Holy angels guard thy bed!
Heavenly blessings without number
Gently falling on thy head.
How much better thou’rt attended
Than the Son of God could be,
When from heaven He descended
And became a child like thee!
Soft and easy is thy cradle:
Coarse and hard thy Savior lay,
When His birthplace was a stable
And His softest bed was hay.
– Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
