Here Among the Flowers
Various musical textures depict Chesterton’s clever poem.
SATB unaccompanied
This short piece will be a delightful excursion in any concert for an advanced SATB ensemble. The text’s sacred message is disguised to look and feel like a secular poem. Different musical textures depict contrasting moments of the text fast and rhythmic, then thicker and slower chordal writing, and concluding with a lively madrigal-style flourish.
Composer’s Notes
I had been saving G.K. Chesterton’s poem “The Skeleton” for the right project, and when Jackson Thomas and I began talking about a piece for KC VITAs early in 2017, I suggested it. I love how this poem’s serious message of Christian confidence is wrapped up in such playful imagery. Enjoy and exaggerate the contrasting sections!

Text
Chattering finch and waterfly
Are not merrier than I;
Here among the flowers I lie
Laughing everlastingly.
No, I may not tell the best;
Surely, friends, I might have guessed
Death was but the good King’s jest,
It was hid so carefully.
– G.K. Chesterton
