Why Do the Nations Rage?
The opening chorus from the oratorio Prophet Songs; words from Psalm 2.
SATB, Piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
“Why Do the Nations Rage?” with words from Psalm 2 is a fast and furious anthem that serves as the opening chorus of the oratorio.
The full piano/vocal score of Prophet Songs and the orchestral score and parts are available from the composer at timothyhoekman@gmail.com.
Text
Why do the nations rage and plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against the Lord’s anointed. This is what they say: “Let us break their bonds asunder, let us cast their chains away!” The one who sits in heaven will laugh them to scorn, the Lord will have them in derision. God will rebuke them in anger and terrify them in fury. Be warned, you rulers of the earth: serve the Lord with fear and trembling or perish in God’s wrath.
