Unsung
SATB (div) with cello and percussion
If the Earth could sing, what would it sound like? What would it say to us?
In this compelling five-movement cycle for choir, cello, and percussion, Canadian composer Katerina Gimon and poet Lauren Peat bring this idea to life, giving voice to landscapes and natural forces like melting glaciers, majestic mountains, and a roaring hurricane – with each movement highlighting a different geographic region in Canada. Venturing from moments of potent rhythmic energy to heart-wrenching lyrical beauty, Unsung takes audiences on a powerful musical and emotional journey that celebrates our planet’s splendour and urges humankind to reflect on our role in shaping its future.
This concert-length work is a great fit for program on themes of nature, the environment, advocacy, and more.
Note: This work is available for SSAA or SATB choir. The instrumental parts, purchased separately, are for both versions.
Composer’s Notes
Conductor’s note:
“Singing Unsung was a meaningful and thought-provoking process for our choir. It challenged the singers and I to confront the realities of environmental change, engage in conversation, and consider our own impact. Each movement offers a lens into a different crisis—hurricanes, bison migration, melting glaciers—urging both singers and audiences to connect with these urgent issues on a personal level. I encourage conductors to go beyond the notes, to share resources, and to foster discussions with their singers.”
