SSAA chorus, piano

Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.

Wisdom is personified as a woman in the book of Proverbs. An SSAA chorus sings this woman’s words of advice in “Song of Lady Wisdom,” using verses from Proverbs 8 and 9.

The full piano/vocal score of Prophet Songs and the orchestral score and parts are available from the composer at timothyhoekman@gmail.com.

Text

I, Wisdom, take my stand on the heights and at the crossroads, by the gates of the city I cry out. Listen all you people! My mouth speaks truth, for my lips detest evil. All the works of my mouth are righteousness, nothing false or crooked is in them. Choose my instruction rather than silver, knowledge rather than finest gold, for wisdom is better than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil; I hate pride and arrogance. Counsel and strong judgment are mine, I have insight and power. By me kings rule and princes decree justice. I love those who love me, and those who seek me will find me. God brought me forth at the beginning of the world; when God established the heavens, I was there. I was with God at the foundation of the earth. Therefore, children, listen to me: Blessed are those who keep my ways; those who find me find life and receive the favor of the Lord. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
