SATB, piano (or a cappella)

A meditative and powerful piece with a text written by the composer, that affirms God’s goodness though times of difficulty and darkness. Lyrical, it contemplatively builds to an intense climax focusing on the word “light.” Excellent for colleges, universities, and both Christian and Shabat services.

Composer’s Notes

“In the Shadow, I Will Sing!” was written for the Colonial Church Chorale (Edina, MN), Timothy Sawyer, Music Director, and commissioned by the American Composers Forum through its Faith Partners Program, funded by the Otto Bremer Foundation.

In many ways, this piece is a journal of a very difficult year in my life, including the illness and death of my father, another family member’s terrible car accident and recovery, and the death of a dear friend. My writing was slow and often involved periods of grieving at the same time. What I learned during this year of intense struggling, is that in the middle of all the sadness there are blessings, joy, and preciousness to each day, and for this goodness, I can sing to God. That is what this piece is all about.

The multitude of difficulties really brought this message to my heart, repeatedly.
I wrote the text with fragments and inspiration from various Psalms, and verses from Isaiah and Luke. The composition is also inscribed with a Native American quote, full of wisdom, that summarizes my year in the shadows:
Inscription:
The secret of life is in the shadows and not in the open sun:
To see anything at all,
You must look deeply into the shadow of a living thing.

Text

I will wait upon your mercies,
I will wait upon the Lord.
May your unfailing love rest upon me, Adonai.

My hope is in you all day long,
My heart rejoices in you.
Find strength my soul in God alone
Who will sustain and renew.

I praise your holy name,
I trust your faithfulness.

O take my hand and lead me through
the pain and darkness of the night.

You are my help, to you I cling,
and in the shadow of your wings,
I sing to you, I sing to you!

O take my hand and lead me through
the pain and darkness, into your glorious light.

I praise your holy name,
I trust your faithfulness.

I will wait upon your mercies,
I will wait upon the Lord.
I sing to you, I sing to you!

Redeem me in your love,
Fill my soul with brightness,
And guide me to your peace.
