Perhaps
A gorgeous ode to why we sing.
SATB a cappella
The text for “Perhaps” originated as a program note, though the conductor of Choral Arts Initiative, Brandon Elliott, never intended for his concert description to be set to music. But his words beautifully capture what musicians express through our compositions and performances. “Perhaps we may live an answer or illuminate a story,” he writes; “Perhaps we may not.” The last sentence of the text quotes a line from Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem “To Kathleen,” seeking comfort in “such things as flowers, and song, and you.”
“Perhaps” is dedicated to Brandon and Choral Arts Initiative in celebration of their fifth season. This piece was composed in residence at Willapa Bay AiR.
Composer’s Notes
I’ve had the privilege of working with Choral Arts Initiative several times. Reading Brandon Elliott’s program note at a concert, I was struck by how perfect it would be as a text to set to music. Usually I get an author’s permission before I set a text to music, but this piece was set as an early surprise gift to CAI for their fifth anniversary. Luckily, Brandon approved of my decision to set his words, and CAI premiered the piece later that season.

Text
In our lifetime, we will undoubtedly have so many
questions left unanswered.
So many stories will be left untold.
Perhaps we may live an answer or illuminate a story.
Perhaps we may not.
So we turn to the security of constancy as dependable as the sea,
nature full of beauty and peace,
music that can teach and inspire.
Perhaps all we can do is seek comfort
in such things as flowers, and song, and you.
— Brandon Elliott
