In “Journey On, “ Harris demonstrates a limitless ability to transform and develop both rhythmic and melodic ideas. One might say that the message of the piece—to “journey on”—is represented by a dazzling musical journey through meter, rhythm, melody, and texture. The piano accompaniment drives the work onward, with a Bach-like rhythmic motor, while every voice part has something fun and exciting to sing. “Journey On” is also a great piece for teaching students the function and expressive values of hemiola, metrical variety, and rhythmic contrast.
