for SSA choir, cello, piano and percussion

A lengthy instrumental solo introduces “Inception,” setting the stage for a soulful wordless chorus. Busy percussion parts are reminiscent of stones and bones of the earth. The choir’s proclamation of truth repeats like a mantra until concluding with the word Yoruba “Asé,” the divine power that initiates everything into being.

Text

What grows in broken spaces?
When blood becomes dust
When bone settles to stone
When they think there’s nothing left
We’ll make a harvest of our breath
Unfold stories from the soil
Of the miracle of ourselves
