for SSA choir, cello, piano and percussion

3. Roots

Boykin’s new choral cycle, “American Prophecy,” combines percussion, piano, cello, and choir into a powerful and forceful piece. The prophecy is American in terms of a legacy of resilience. It is an ability to persevere past what has aimed to silence or kill us, particularly in terms of Black Americans and Indigenous peoples. Musically, the work shines by enabling independent and equal voices for the singers and instrumentalists. All are woven together as an orchestrated whole. Originally conceived as an interdisciplinary work for choir and choreographed dancers, the performance possibilities for “American Prophecy” are only limited by your imagination.

Text

I. Inception
What grows in broken spaces?
When blood becomes dust
When bone settles to stone
When they think there’s nothing left
We’ll make a harvest of our breath
Unfold stories from the soil
Of the miracle of ourselves

II. Balance
And what was meant for bad
We’ll mold in our own hands
To soothe what was scattered
And gather what was bruised
Soul flowers from flesh – rise
to suns our Mothers made shine
when we were only star seeds, smaller than sand
flickering embers in night’s dark expanse

III. Roots
Our roots are in the vision
Promises for suffering sown
Strong as heartwood, sure as stone
May our marrow guide us home
Through this life and the next
What the earth knows, never dies
Our soul is an archive
We evolve, we survive
