I Had No Time To Hate
With such limited time on this Earth, we need to find the time to love, not hate.
SATB a cappella Chorus with Divisi
Commissioned by Alex Canovas and the Young New Yorkers’ Chorus for their Annual Competition for Young Composers, “I Had No Time To Hate” is a piece that invites the listener to evaluate their perception of time and how we spend it for ourselves and with the people in our lives. Setting this text in a simple yet complex way gives the piece a deep well of emotion while keeping the message Dickinson intended. We must choose ourselves at times even when it is letting go of love we thought we needed. Evocative and singable, this piece is perfect to for adding depth and emotion to any program.
“I Had No Time To Hate” is the winner of the Nathan Davis Grand Prize in Composition for the 2024 Competition for Young Composers.
Text
I had no time to Hate—
Because The Grave would hinder Me—
And life was not so
Ample I
Could finish—Enmity
Nor had I time to Love—
But since
Some Industry must be—
The little Toil of Love—
I thought
Be large enough for Me—
