About the Composer
Carol Barnett
Carol Barnett (Beady Eyes)
Franklin Credo
A quintessentially American credo, sturdy, unabashed; a pragmatic and stately setting of a pragmatic and stately writer.
SATB a cappella
In a letter to Ezra Stiles, dated March 9, 1790, Benjamin Franklin wrote his own Credo of faith in the lucid, straight-forward style prized by the founding fathers. Carol Barnett renders that Enlightenment attitude through a insistent march in the tenor and bass, overlaid by declamatory sopranos and altos. An ideal piece for church choirs and congregants in search of plainspoken theology or a liturgy steeped in Americana.
Text
Here is my Creed. I believe in one God, Creator of the Universe. That he governs it by his Providence.
That he ought to be worshipped. That the most acceptable Service we render to him is doing good to his other
Children. That the soul of Man is immortal, and will be treated with Justice in another Life respecting its
Conduct in this. These I take to be the…Principles of all sound Religion, and I regard them…in whatever Sect I
meet with them.
