Felicidad (Happiness)
for SATB choir and piano
“Felicidad” (“Happiness”) presents us with a profound poem that emphasizes the importance of appreciating the small things, not allowing our worries to overshadow our lives, and finding happiness even in the midst of adversity. We are reminded that happiness can be found in all aspects of life, even during difficult times. The music is rhythmic and lively, the piano should accompany energetically, in order to motivate the choir to capture the essence of collective effort and teamwork through each voice.
Composer’s Notes
It is extremely gratifying to discover new choirs interested in deepening their knowledge of Mexican culture and learning various musical rhythms and styles. Sharon Quattrin-Campagna, the choir director at Hubbard High School, clearly demonstrates this interest and has made a remarkable effort to connect with her choir, which comprises a significant percentage of Latino students. For this reason, it was very stimulating for me to write this piece for them.
The work “Felicidad” (Happiness) encapsulates this very spirit. The writer José Alfredo Barrón presents us with a profound poem that emphasizes the importance of appreciating the small things, not allowing our worries to overshadow our lives, and finding happiness even in the midst of adversity. He reminds us that happiness can be found in all aspects of life, even during difficult times. Llevar cautivos los pensamientos
que nos conducen a desazón,
hallar el gozo en los tormentos
aún sin que exista una razón.
Buscar la pauta o la sinfonía
por esos valles de la ilusión,
entre sus pliegues la sintonía
que nos produce la comprensión.
Besar la cuerda que nos ataba
palpar la luz más allá del sol,
tocar la nota que nos faltaba
¡Romper el lazo y todo control!
Cuando ese estado se consolida
y creas resuelta tu situación,
sella el concepto porque se olvida
Surge al momento nueva ocasión.
Ver sin quererlo, porque así pasa
en la atadura, la libertad,
pues lo que anhelas está en tu casa
¡Siempre lo ha estado, Felicidad!

that lead us to dismay,
Finding joy in torments

touching the light beyond the sun,
striking the note we longed to sound,
breaking the tie and all control at once!
When this state becomes steadfast
and your situation seems resolved,
seal the concept before it is surpassed
by a new moment that has evolved.
Seeing without wanting to, for thus it occurs,
in bondage lies liberty,
for what you yearn for is in your home,
where it has always been: Happiness!
