”Hocket“ literally means “hiccup.” It is a technique by which a single melody is divided between several voices, commonly used in Andean, African, and Indonesian music. In this piece, the technique is used to imitate an unaccompanied jazz saxophone solo. The interlocking lines should eventually become invisible, the melodies moving from part to part seamlessly, as if the entire choir were a single instrument. Which, of course, it is.
