Song of Praise
A majestic hymn of praise; the conclusion of the oratorio Prophet Songs. Words from Psalm 150.
SATB chorus, sop., mez., ten. & bar. soloists, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
“Song of Praise” (Psalm 150) brings the oratorio to its enthusiastic conclusion. Chorus, soloists, orchestra, and “everything that has breath” all join in a majestic hymn of praise: Hallelujah!
The full piano/vocal score of Prophet Songs and the orchestral score and parts are available from the composer at timothyhoekman@gmail.com.
Text
Hallelujah! Praise God in God’s holy place! Praise God in the heavens! Praise God for God’s great and mighty deeds! Praise God with the trumpet sound! Praise God with the lute and harp! Praise God with tambourines and with dancing! Praise God with flutes and strings! Praise God with loud crashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Hallelujah!
(adapted from Psalm 150)
