An aria full of light and joy, with familiar words from Isaiah 60.
Aria for soprano, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
“Arise, Shine!” is an aria for soprano. It is full of light and joy, since the prophet says: “Arise, shine, for your light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” The familiar words come from Isaiah 60.

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Although darkness covers the earth, though thick darkness covers the nations, the Lord will arise over you, God’s glory will appear above you. Nations will come to your light and kings to the brightness of your dawn. I will appoint Peace as your governor and Righteousness as your taskmaster. No longer will violence be heard in your land, neither ruin nor destruction within your borders. You will call your walls Salvation and your gates, Praise. The sun will not be your light by day, the brightness of the moon no longer will shine on you, for God will be your everlasting light, and God will be your glory.
