Have You Not Known?
Those who hope in God will soar on wings like eagles. Words from Isaiah 40.
SSAATTBB chorus, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
“Have You Not Known?” is for SSAATTBB chorus. The words from Isaiah 40:28-31 express the greatness of God, ending with the confidence that those who hope in God will soar on wings like eagles.

Text
Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundation of the earth? Adonai is the everlasting God, the creator of the whole world. God does not faint or grow weary; no one can understand the mind of God. God gives strength to the weary and power to the powerless. Even young people will grow tired, they will stumble and fall; but those who hope in Adonai will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint.
