Song of Hannah
Hannah gives thanks and praise for the birth of her son, Samuel. Words from I Samuel 2.
Mezzo-Soprano, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
The “Song of Hannah” is an aria for mezzo-soprano. In it, Samuel’s mother praises God for answering her prayer and giving her a child. The words come from I Samuel 2.

Text
My heart rejoices in the Lord, my strength is exalted in God. I laugh at my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. There is no one holy like the Lord, there is no rock like our God. Stop your proud boasting, silence your arrogant words, for God knows and judges what people do. The bows of the mighty are broken, while the feeble are armed with strength. The well fed have hired themselves out for bread, while those who were hungry are hungry no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, while the mother of many wastes away. The Lord brings death and restores life; God brings down to the grave and raises up. The Lord makes poor and rich; God humbles and exalts and lifts the needy from their misery to make them sit with princes. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, on them God has set the world. The Lord will guard the feet of the faithful, but the wicked will be cut off in darkness, for not by strength does one prevail. The Most High will thunder in heaven; God will judge the ends of the earth.
