Variaçao
In this rhythmically delightful lullaby, women’s sprightly nonsense syllables contrast with lyrical men’s entreaties, finally converging as the choir sings the child to sleep.
SSAATTBB a cappella
“Variaçao” sets a shifting pentatonic melody invented by composer Janika Vandervelde as a calming influence during a harrowing car ride on her visit to Portugal. The piece creates a dialogue between the men’s soothing melody and the women’s quicker nonsense syllables — differing ways of putting a child to sleep. As the piece reaches its resolution, the men’s and women’s parts converge, coalescing into a single chord as sleep arrives.
Composer’s Notes
Variacao was commissioned in 2000 by Janika Vandervelde as part of a musical birthday present to her fiancé, Larry Fuchsberg. It was premiered on the Dale Warland Singers’ Echoes of Christmas
concerts in December 2000, and is based on a beautiful and calming lullaby that she imagined and sang to him as they toured the Portuguese countryside in a rented car, nerves jangled by the poor roads and terrifying fellow drivers.
