SSAA, Violin and Tibetan Singing Bowls/Bells
An empowering and joyful setting of the beautiful text from St. Theresa di Lisieux including antiphonal alleluias and a rousing dance-like ending!
Composer’s Notes
“A Canticle of Blessing” was commissioned by Partners in Praise Girls Chorus and Julia Fahey, Artistic Director. It is written for SSAA choir, violin and Tibetan singing bowls or handbells. It is alternatively set for piano and bells as well (arrangement available Fall 2017).
This work dramatically sets the beautiful and empowering text from St. Therese di Lisieux. Opening with the singing bowls and choral alleluias, the connection with timelessness is immediately established, and the listener can imagine the life of this young nun, who lived at the end of the 19th century (1873-1897) in France. Musically, antiphonal or processional possibilities abound with this beginning. As the text unfolds, each statement lyrically builds upon the previous one, moving to the dance-like setting of the last three lines. The solo violin both supports and presents expository material, and the singing bowls/bells add a universal, meditative and spiritual presence.
*Note – the recording heard is an earlier version in the key of gminor; this is the newly revised in the key of a minor

Text
May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are… where you
are meant to be.
May you not forget the
infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
and pass on the love
that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a
child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the
freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.
– St. Theresa of Lisieux
