Heaven Full of Stars
A rich and dramatic setting of Teasdale’s moving text of the starry realm.
SSAA a cappella
Commissioned by a consortium of illustrious women’s vocal ensembles, this dramatic setting highlights the majesty of a starry night. The stars’ long and eternal march across the black sky transfixes us and transports us to thoughts beyond the mortal coil to heavenly realms. With challenging textures and harmonies, architecture and musical structures are the definitive elements in this moving piece.
Text
Alone in the night
On a dark hill
With pines around me
Spicy and still,
And heaven full of stars
Over my head
White and topaz
And misty red;
Myriads with beating
Hearts of fire
That aeons
Cannot vex or tire;
Up the dome of heaven
Like a great hill,
I watch them marching
Stately and still,
And I know that I
Am honored to be
Witness
Of so much majesty.
– Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)
