Shchedryk Ukrainian Choir Series
Алилуя / Alleluia
Roman Surzha
A musical meditation: humility and expectation, delight and affirmation.
SSA div. choir with optional bells
“Allelujah” is a call to praise God. The composer Roman Surzha dedicated this work to his mother Eleonora Vinogradova.
This work is a musical meditation: there is humility and expectation, delight and affirmation. These states flow from one to another through development, dissolving into the gentle sounds of small bells in the end. The character of the Gregorian chant in the beginning is replaced by the solar glare of the moving middle and atmospheric free coda. The tempo and internal phrasing are not fixed, the work is open to creative interpretation.
At the international choral and sacred music festival Musica Sacra a Roma, held in the summer residence of the Pope in 2005, “Allelujah” performed by the Shchedryk Choir, received the highest score which brought them victory in the competition.
