Composer’s Notes
“Vyidy Ivanku”/ “Come out Ivanko” is a musical fantasy and stylization of folk songs performed in spring, calling for the arrival of the sun and warmth. Such songs are called “vesnyanka” which means “spring songs.” The male name Ivanko is a diminutive of Ivan.
This work was commissioned by the Shchedryk choir specifically for performance at the choir festival in Basel, Switzerland in 2020. The festival was canceled due to the covid epidemic. So, the premiere took place in 2023 when the festival continued its existence again, but we were already at war in Ukraine.
The musical theme of the chorus is an echo of the folk melody that sounds in the first piano concerto of Piotr Tchaikovsky. The work has interesting rhythmic variations, a wide dynamic range and a diverse texture. You can use percussion (tambourine, small drums, etc.) to enhance the playful state. Performances of this work always evokes an enthusiastic audience response.
