Nature Walks, Set II
SSAA chorus a cappella
Four short poems by the witty Ogden Nash provide the texts for these songs for women’s chorus. These Nash creatures are sure to bring a chuckle (or at least a smile) to singers and audiences. The songs were commissioned for and premiered by the Lincoln High School Women’s Chorale in Tallahassee, Florida.
Text
1. The Squid
What happy appellations these
Of birds and beasts in companies!
A shrewdness of apes, a sloth of bears,
A sculk of foxes, a huske of hares.
An exaltation ‘tis of larks,
And possibly a grin of sharks,
But I declare a squirt of squid
I should not like to be amid.
Skin divers boldly swim through sepia,
But I can think of nothing creepier.
2. The Manatee
The manatee is harmless
And conspicuously charmless.
Luckily the manatee
Is quite devoid of vanity.
3. The Praying Mantis
From whence arrived the praying mantis?
From outer space, or lost Atlantis?
I glimpse the grim, green metal mug
That masks this pseudo-saintly bug,
Orthopterous, also carnivorous,
And faintly whisper, Lord deliver us.
4. The Abominable Snowman
I’ve never seen an abominable snowman,
I’m hoping not to see one,
I’m also hoping, if I do,
That it will be a wee one.
