Give Love
Connect with each other, recognize strength, and declare love fiercely.
SATB, piano
This tender setting by Takach praises the simple acts of connecting with each other, recognizing our strength, and declaring our love fiercely. These acts enable us to care for ourselves by giving to others. first working through the darkness that we hold in our memories. Singers will love the elegant combination of step-wise voice leading and intervalic jumps. Beautiful melodic lines, voice pairs, and a rising climactic moment combine to make this piece a quiet stand-out in your program.
Composer’s Notes
Creating art about self care and mental health, searching for awareness and acceptance, it’s inevitable you have to work your way through some darkness first. The darkness in Julia Klatt Singer’s poem comes in the form of lost melodies, departing birds and burning trees, but she also grounds the text in strength. We do carry the weight of many things and hold much in our hearts. The simple acts of connecting with another, recognizing our own strength (manifesting in surprising ways), and declaring our love fiercely enable us to care for ourselves by giving to others.

Text
Even when the song that woke you
Is no longer being sung,
you go where the melody leads you
follow the notes one by one.
Even when the city of trees burns
and the birds fly away,
you fight the fires, you clear the air,
write our names in ash and clay.
And when you carry the weight
of birdsong, cradle the nest,
your body is as strong as a tree,
your heart, immense.
And when you tell each and every one
You cherish, you see no other choice
But to love fiercely,
To give love voice.
Even then, when you feel you’ve got nothing
and nothing to say,
say hello. You have me.
You have this. We have today.
