Suo-Gân
This non-sectarian lullaby achieves a marvelous echo-effect.
SATB double choir, tenor solo
“Suo-Gân” is scored for double SATB choir (which may be split antiphonally). The music was crafted and designed in such a way that the music from one choir is off-set by a beat, and a marvelous echo-effect is achieved. At the height of the work, warm and enveloping colors of the lullaby are echoed over and over throughout the land.
“Suo-Gân” is entirely non-sectarian which makes it enjoyable and accessible to diverse audiences. The piece is set in the English language and contains a comprehensive piano reduction.
Composer’s Notes
I wanted to create an aural depiction of people standing on different mountain peaks singing the same folk-like lullaby. As they call from the mountains into the valleys below, the people within the valley respond with a simple unison voice that echoes the sentiment. At the height of the work, the mountains and valleys are filled with warm and enveloping colors of the lullaby being echoed over and over throughout the land.

Text
Suo-gân (Welsh, meaning Lullaby)
Suo-gân, do not weep,
Suo-gân, go to sleep;
Suo-gân, mother’s near,
Suo-gân, have no fear.
Suo-gân, Eastern Star,
Suo-gân, from afar;
Suo-gân, from above,
Suo-gân, song of love.
Go to sleep, mother’s near.
Song of love: Suo-gân
