Stillness and the Night
A beautiful lullaby for any concert occasion.
SATB a cappella
Commissioned by Robert Drafall for the State College High School Choral Program, on the occasion of his retirement.
“Stillness and the Night,” Paul John Rudoi’s setting of Shakespeare’s beautiful text from The Merchant of Venice, evokes a sense of serene peace. The vocal lines waltz and sigh throughout, offering a beautiful lullaby for any concert occasion.
Composer’s Notes
This piece was written in many ways as a response to Vaughan Williams’ setting of the same text. Aim for a similar, lullaby-like feel, and don’t be afraid to sing into the climax when it finally arrives!
Text
How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank!
Here will we sit and let the sounds of music
Creep in our ears: soft stillness and the night
Become the touches of sweet harmony.
– William Shakespeare
