Peace, My Heart
At the time of our death, let everything we are, be at rest.
SATB Chorus, SA Chorus, & Piano
Commissioned by Tina Peterson, along with the Irvine High School Singers & Canta Bella, this piece is set to a moving text by the prolific poet Rabindranath Tagore. The work offers a moment for an SATB chorus and SA chorus to combined for a striking number in any program. Each chorus has artistic value and meaning. The SATB chorus plays the role of the logical and formal voice of the poem, speaking about the transcending moment of death. The SA chorus acts as the emotion and feeling behind this stage of our lives, and together they offer two points of perspective. The piano sets the tone of light heartedness as we travel towards our final moments in this beautiful world. This piece can be programmed with themes of life and death, renewal, and finding peace. Given the world premiere of this commission was placed as an opener, it is a beautiful opportunity for all musicians to be present and performing together.
Text
Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet.
Let it not be a death but completeness.
Let love melt into memory and pain into songs.
Let the flight through the sky end
in the folding of the wings over the nest.
Let the last touch of your hands be
gentle like the flower of the night.
Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a
moment, and say your last words in silence.
I bow to you and hold up my lamp
to light you on your way.
-Rabindranath Tagore
