In Paradisum
A dynamic eight-part setting, describing the soul’s arrival in paradise
SSAATTBB a cappella choir
“In Paradisum,” an ancient text sometimes included in musical settings of the Requiem Mass, stands on its own in this dynamic eight-part setting. The opening is still and peaceful, as the text describes the soul’s arrival in paradise. Gradually the calm gives way to a sense of movement, created by a polyphonic passage which builds in intensity as the soul is brought to Jerusalem and greeted by a chorus of angels. Finally, the stillness returns and the music fades to nothing on the final word, “requiem.”
Text
In paradisum deducant te angeli;
in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.
Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere,
aeternam habeas requiem.
Translation:
May the angels take you into paradise;
at your coming, may the martyrs receive you,
and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem.
May a choir of angels greet you,
and with Lazarus, once poor,
may you have eternal rest.
