Maria Walks Amid the Thorn
A gently re-harmonized legato Advent carol.
SATB a cappella
This traditional German carol is treated in a lush chorale style with accessible, jazz-influenced harmony. This arrangement isn’t beyond the reach of an average high school group or church choir, but more advanced ensembles can sing this into an expressive feast for the ears.
Composer’s Notes
This German carol originated in the 19th century, and the melody is set here in a straightforward way in all three verses. Ensembles should take a smooth legato approach, and feel free to let the tempo ebb and flow. Be careful with the dissonant intervals – a non-vibrato approach will ensure that the crunchy chords speak clearly.
Text
Maria walks amid the thorn,
Kyrie eleison.
Which seven years no leaf has borne,
She walks amid the wood of thorn.
Jesu and Maria.
What ‘neath her heart does Mary bear?
Kyrie eleison.
A little child does Mary bear,
Beneath her heart He nestles there.
Jesu and Maria.
And as the two are passing near,
Kyrie eleison,
Lo! roses on the thorns appear,
Lo! roses on the thorns appear.
Jesu and Maria.
