Be Still, My Soul
arr. C. Rand Matheson
Beautiful setting of Sibelius’ hymn, “Finlandia.”
SATB (div.) a cappella
Note: Due to copyright restrictions, this piece is only available to customers based in the United States.
An arrangement of the tune “Finlandia” by Sibelius. The tune was heard in a section of the patriotic tone poem Finlandia and is an homage to Sibelius’ homeland, Finland. This setting captures the respect of the composer’s original intent and creates a reverent and mystical tone for both the singer and the audience.
Composer’s Notes
“Be Still, My Soul” brings a fresh texture to a timeless sacred classic. Written for unaccompanied SATB choir, this setting balances accessible voice-leading with rich, expressive harmonic nuance. Long, seamless phrases encourage effortless breath support and delicate dynamic shading, making it an accessible yet deeply rewarding selection for high school, collegiate, and church ensembles.
I arranged this hymn during the height of the 2020 pandemic as a personal search for peace amidst chaos. My hope is that this music offers that same sense of grounding stillness to your choir and audience.

Text
Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side;
With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In ev’ry change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: The hour is hast’ning on;
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone.
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: When change and tears are past,
All safe an blessed we shall meet at last.
Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side.
Be still, my soul.
