Comfort My People
Words of comfort and expectation from Isaiah 40:1-5.

Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
In “Comfort My People,” the familiar words of comfort and expectation from Isaiah 40:1-5 are sung by the chorus to begin Part II of the oratorio.

This is what God says: Comfort my people. Speak tenderly to them; tell them that their hard service has ended, that their sins have been forgiven. A voice cries out: Clear a road through the desert for the Lord, make a straight highway for our God! Fill every valley, level every mountain, make the rough places into a plain. Then the glory of God will be revealed; all people will see it, all people will see the glory of God. For this is what God says.
